Designing digital experiences for ScreenRights.

Role

Senior UX/UI Designer

Year

2022-2024

Overview

Screenrights is a non-profit organisation that supports the screen industry through rights and royalty management services. They license the use of film, television, and radio content for educators, government organisations, and retransmitters, while helping rightsholders receive royalties. They also provide services such as worldwide royalty collection, film and TV disbursements, and residuals management.
My time with Screenrights gave me the opportunity to work on two important digital products: the Members App and the Staff App.
The business behind these products involved complex information, processes, and workflows. My responsibility was to help turn those requirements into user-friendly interfaces that made sense to both users and the business.

Members App

The Members App was designed around the needs of Screenrights members and their interaction with the organisation’s services.
My role involved working through user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity interface designs. The goal was to create a clearer experience while still supporting the business rules and requirements behind the platform.
I helped translate complex workflows into structured screens and interactions that could be reviewed by stakeholders and prepared for development.

Staff App

The Staff App focused on supporting the internal side of the Screenrights ecosystem.
While the Members App served external users, the Staff App required a different understanding of the organisation’s internal workflows and processes.

From Complexity to Clarity

The work involved exploring different user flows, creating wireframes and prototypes, and developing high-fidelity designs that could be reviewed by the business and development teams.
Both projects required close attention to consistency. Since the applications were part of the same product ecosystem, I also helped maintain a design approach that could support consistency and future development.

A Difficult Goodbye

Sadly, around the third quarter of 2024, the company’s newly hired CTO introduced a business proposal focused on optimising development costs. Part of that direction involved reducing the remote workforce in favour of hiring more on-site employees.
Unfortunately, I was among the remote team members affected by the change.
Still, I remain very thankful for my time with Screenrights. The experience strengthened my ability to work across product design, UX/UI, business requirements, stakeholder collaboration, and Agile development.

My role

I led and supported UX/UI design work across the Members App and Staff App.
My responsibilities included:
  • Working with stakeholders to understand business and user requirements
  • Breaking down complex workflows into clearer user flows
  • Applying design-thinking methods to explore and validate solutions
  • Creating user flows, wireframes, and prototypes
  • Designing high-fidelity interfaces for review and development
  • Translating complex business processes into practical user experiences
  • Presenting design work for stakeholder feedback and approval
  • Working within an Agile development environment
  • Collaborating with developers to support implementation
  • Helping maintain consistency across different parts of the product ecosystem
  • Supporting design decisions throughout the project development life cycle
  • Balancing user needs, business requirements, technical limitations, and project timelines
My role required more than creating interfaces. It involved understanding how the business worked, asking the right questions, and helping the team turn complex requirements into experiences that were easier to use and develop.
